The University of South Carolina community is mourning the loss of 21-year-old junior Nathanial “Nate” Baker, who tragically passed away following a hit-and-run accident on Wednesday.
According to the Columbia Police Department, Baker, a business major from Glen Allen, Virginia, was riding his motorcycle at the intersection of Assembly and Blossom streets when he was struck by a pickup truck. The driver of the truck, along with other occupants, fled the scene on foot. Baker was transported to Prisma Health Richland Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
Authorities confirmed that the driver has been arrested and is facing multiple charges, including hit-and-run resulting in death, failure to render aid, and driving without a license. The Columbia Police Department has not yet disclosed the name of the suspect or further details about the circumstances leading to the accident.
The devastating news has left Baker’s family, friends, and the wider community in grief. The University of South Carolina issued a statement offering condolences and support to those affected.
“Our prayers and deepest sympathies go out to Nate’s family and friends during this difficult time,” University Spokesperson Collyn Taylor said. “Counseling staff are actively working with those impacted, and services are available to any member of our campus community affected by this tragedy. The accident is currently under investigation by the Columbia Police Department.”
Baker was a beloved member of the Deep Run Lacrosse family, where he was known as a talented athlete and a bright presence both on and off the field.
“The Deep Run Lacrosse family is heartbroken by the loss of one of our own, Nate Baker,” the team shared on Facebook. “Nate was a star on the field and in life. His smile lit up a room, and he was funny, smart, and kind. Nate was a fierce competitor and locked down the goal like a champ. We are so proud of you, and you will be forever in our hearts. Sending all our love and prayers to the Baker family.”
Tributes poured in from those who knew Baker, with loved ones expressing their sorrow and frustration over the tragic circumstances of his passing.
“Please keep my family Leslie, Dan, Grant, Emily Grace, and my parents Bobby and Susan Carroll in your prayers,” Dean Plyler wrote. “Nate Baker was taken from them way too soon! He had his whole life ahead of him, and it was taken by someone who shouldn’t have even been driving. RIP Nate!”
Baker is survived by his family, including Leslie, Dan, Grant, and Emily Grace.
The investigation into the accident is ongoing, and police urge anyone with information to come forward.
