The Toronto community is mourning the loss of Miguel J. Escalante, a dedicated professional and respected member of Toronto Hydro, who passed away recently. His contributions to the electrical and power distribution industry left a lasting impact, and his absence will be deeply felt by colleagues, friends, and family.
Miguel served as a Distribution System Technologist at Toronto Hydro, where he played a crucial role in the planning, coordination, and maintenance of power distribution projects. His expertise extended to substation automation, protection systems, and network operations, ensuring the city’s electrical infrastructure operated efficiently and safely. Prior to this, he held various engineering roles, including positions at Honda of Canada Mfg., Georgian College, Swisher Dominicana, Inc., and EDENORTE, S.A., demonstrating his vast experience and technical acumen in power systems and electrical engineering.
Originally from the Dominican Republic, Miguel pursued his passion for engineering, earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Electromechanical Engineering from Pontificia Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra and further advancing his studies at Georgian College in Canada. His dedication to education and mentorship was evident in his role as a Peer Tutor, where he guided aspiring engineers with his knowledge and experience.
Beyond his professional achievements, Miguel was known for his kindness, work ethic, and unwavering commitment to excellence. His ability to solve complex engineering challenges while fostering teamwork and mentorship made him a valued member of every organization he worked with.
Miguel’s passing is a profound loss to his family, friends, and colleagues. His legacy as a skilled engineer, mentor, and dedicated professional will live on in the projects he contributed to and the people he inspired.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date. In honor of Miguel’s memory, donations may be made to organizations supporting education in engineering or mental health initiatives.
